Maybe I Need an Apple Watch?

A man from Maine fell through the ice in neighboring New Hampshire when he went for a skate, but he credits his Apple watch with saving his life. Bill Rogers has been skating all his life and is an avid outdoorsman, so he thought he’d enjoy a quick skate on the Salmon Falls River, but the ice had other ideas.

He hadn’t gotten very far from shore when the ice gave way and Rogers was in the frigid water. He tried to climb out, but couldn’t get up on the ice and he had his phone in his pocket, but he was afraid that if he reached for it, he’d lose his grip and get swept under by the river’s strong current. Then he remembered he was wearing his Apple watch. He pulled off his glove and yelled at Siri to call emergency services and rescue crews were there in minutes.

By his own admission, he didn’t think he had too much longer before he was going to succumb to the cold,” says Somersworth Fire Chief George Kramlinger. Rogers says he’s grateful to those who pulled him to safety, adding, “I am a lucky man.”
